  1. Planetary Images
  2.  
  3. This CD-ROM contains over 200 images of planets, satellites, moons, 
  4. asteroids and comets from NASA, ESA, and Soviet planetary missions.  
  5. Each image has an associated caption.  Three image presentations are 
  6. available.  For Macintosh, start the application 'PLANET.MAC'.  This 
  7. will launch a Macromedia Projector which will present a screen with 
  8. a picture of the CD-ROM.  Choose 'Continue' and then choose the 
  9. planet you want to see from the image presented.  For Windows, 
  10. launch 'PLANETPC.EXE' to begin the Macromedia presentation.  The 
  11. steps which follow are identical to those described above for the 
  12. Macintosh.  Finally, for other machines there is an html 
  13. presentation which requires an html browser.  To start this, use 
  14. the browser to open the 'index.html' or '1index.html' files in the 
  15. 'HTML' directory.  All images available in these presentations can 
  16. be accessed separately in the 'GIF' directory.  Larger scale TIFF 
  17. format versions of the images are available in the 'TIFF' 
  18. directory.  A cross-reference between the gif and tiff image ID's 
  19. and the actual image ID's (given at the bottom of the captions) 
  20. is available in the file CROSSREF.TXT.  The names have been changed 
  21. for the html presentation to accomodate computers which can only 
  22. read the shorter (8.3) file names.

  24. The images and captions on this CD-ROM are divided by planetary body 
  25. and further subdivided by mission.  The keywords below each caption 
  26. refer to entries in the 'Encyclopedia of Planetary Sciences', edited 
  27. by Shirley and Fairbridge, 1997 and published by Chapman and Hall 
  28. (800-842-3636).  This CD-ROM was created with partial support from 
  29. Chapman and Hall.

  32. Requirements and Suggestions

  34. The presentation uses Macromedia Director 5.0 for Macintosh and 
  35. Windows.  The Macintosh version requires at minimum a 68020 processor, 
  36. System 7.0, and 4 MB RAM.  The Windows version requires 386/33, 
  37. Windows 3.1, Windows NT 3.5.1, or Windows 95 and 4 MB RAM.  Both 
  38. require 640 x 480 pixel resolution.  A multi-platform HTML version 
  39. requiring a WWW browser is included.  The images are also accessible 
  40. as tiff files.

  45. The image identification numbers are given in parentheses at the end 
  46. of the captions.  Hard copies of the images can be ordered from 
  47. NASA's National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC).  For ordering and
